How do they find us?

Filed under: phpBB — Dave Rathbun @ 8:32 am

I have a photography site that doesn’t get worked on very often. I love the site, and have some (in my humble opinion ;-)) great ideas on how to integrate a phpBB board with the site. I hope that eventually it will be a showcase for what level of integration is possible with phpBB, and a good reference site for what I can offer to potential customers.

As of today, the board is installed but not really integrated. In fact, it doesn’t even have public links anywhere. Yet when I checked it last night, there were 121 users in the users table.

Now I assume that there are “bots” that scour the web looking for “index.php” and checking to see if a phpBB forum responds. That’s the only thing I can think of that would explain how so many “users” found the board and signed up, when in fact there aren’t any public links anywhere to this board!

Anyway, since there aren’t any legitimate users of this board (other than myself) it was a simple and easy process to clean out the user table (along with the user group and group tables) and then lock down the board so that no registrations are possible. To me the important lesson learned here is just how deep the spam issues are for phpBB board owners at this time.

I’m working on a solution that I hope to release as a MOD that will make it easier for board owners to rid themselves of spammers. More details on that in an upcoming blog post.
