Some MODs are quick and easy. Others take time to develop, and therefore evolve over time. Which begs the question: what responsibility does a MOD author have to provide updates from one BETA version to another? More…
Well, they didn’t call it that, they called it “Beta 4″, but the idea is the same. It must have just come out, as I was the 315th person to view the release topic. Oh, and there were only about 15 days between the last two releases. That has to be a good sign.
Or not.
Happy testing, to those of you inclined to do so.
My last post detailed some steps that I’m experimenting with to reduce the number of spam comments being handled by my blog. This morning I added an audit log to see what folks are actually doing (or trying to do) during that process. I included data about the post they were attempting to comment on. It turns out that there is a bit if irony here… the first posts that has attracted the most comments is the one where I talked about getting spammed.
And the other? It’s the one where I talk about the search terms used to find the Doctor site. If you read that post you’ll see what key words are probably attractive to the spammers. As an experiment I might remove that post for a while and see if the spam decreases.
One of the reasons why phpBB is a popular target for spammers is that it’s a popular board. So there’s a decent payback or incentive for spammers to figure out a way to spam the boards, as they know there are a lot of targets out there. To quote a line from one of my favorite movies…
This is what I call a “target rich environment.”
Two points to the first person that can identify the film and the person that delivers the line. No fair googling either… More…
Last night I closed another BETA and declared “Custom Search Flood Controls” to be a release candidate. I also submitted it to the MOD Team for approval. The hardest part? Deciding which category to put it in. More…
With apologies to Anne Rice for borrowing a title…
A few days ago I was approached by someone I had met on phpbb.com with the idea of doing an interview. My first response was… “who, me?” followed by… “why me?” More…
Tonight I closed the BETA for “Forum Auth by Post Count” and declared it to be a release candidate. I submitted it to the MOD Team for approval. More…
I don’t expect you’re getting your phpBB news from my site, but in case you are keeping track the development team released Beta 3 of phpBB3 today. Read the post @ phpbb.com if you would like more details.
It seems they’ve taken several steps forward (299 bugs fixed, according to the post) but also a step sideways as they introduced full UTF-8 support. That means that everything is going to have to be tested and retested once again.
Better now than later on, I guess.
Still no word on when the phpBB Doctor will start supporting phpBB3, as we will wait until the first release candidate to make any moves in that direction. Stay tuned, it’s bound to be an interesting ride.
So I already have about a half-dozen MODs in development, some of them on hold and others more active. I currently have 3 demo boards for “big” MODs running at phpbbdoctor.net. So what did I do?
I started another one. More…
