Now RC1 is out…
I incorrectly reported that RC1 of phpBB3 was out some time back… when in fact all the phpBB Group had done was switch to the new prosilver style. I’ve just returned from a conference in Germany to find that RC1 is now, in fact, out. They have also started MOD Requests/Development/Writer Discussion forums for phpBB3 as well.
I’ll post more about what this means to me personally and to the phpBBDoctor.com in a future post. I’m still thinking.

Yes to me this is great news. Finally we (MOD authors) can discuss and get help and feedback on phpBB.com – while I like other MOD sites your MOD gets to a larger testing audience from phpBB.com
For me its the start of the push to get my one main MOD finished. The prosilver style is the biggest current roadblock for me.
Looking forward to seeing your structured and detailed thinking applied to phpBB3.

Glad to see you’re back! You’ve been away for nearly a month now, it seems

I don’t think you’ve changed you mind… Am I right?

No, I haven’t changed my mind. But I need to decide if I’m going to at least start looking at the code. And I need to figure out where phpBB3 fits into my plans for this site, among other things.
I have at least run the converter on my largest board. It failed, not unexpectedly, due to the large number of modifications that I had installed. And to be honest the fact that phpbb.com has been running the code for some time now (with numerous bugs being fixed as a result) gives me much higher expectations for the eventual “dot-oh” release. One of the challenges with an initial dot-oh (1.0, 3.0, …) release is the lack of real-world testing. Even with beta testing there are things that slip through. But since phpbb.com has been running the pre-release version I have much higher hopes and expectations for the eventual “golden furry” edition.
